🔊 Turn it up and let the funk take over!
“Super Freak” is a 1981 hit single produced and performed by Rick James. Co-written with Alonzo Miller, the track first appeared on James’ landmark album Street Songs and quickly became one of his signature songs.
The recording features background vocals from Motown labelmates The Temptations—with James’ uncle Melvin Franklin on bass vocals—and Canadian singer Taborah Johnson. The unforgettable bassline was played by Oscar Alston, with a tenor saxophone solo by Daniel LeMelle of the Stone City Band.
🎵 Fun Fact: Rick James wasn’t initially thrilled about Super Freak. He reportedly wanted something on the album that, in his own words, “white folks could dance to.” Ironically, that very track turned into one of the most enduring funk anthems of all time.
Rolling Stone ranked Super Freak at #477 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. With its unforgettable hook—“She’s a very kinky girl, the kind you don’t take home to mother”—the song remains a defining moment of funk, pop, and 80s culture.
