Love Your Eyes Kids
"Love Your Eyes, Kids" was the theme under which World Sight Day will celebrated 2024.
I have a question for my readers: those who work tirelessly around the world to protect and safeguard vision are known as Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Refractionists, Ocularists, Ophthalmic Paramedics, and MLOPs (Mid-Level Ophthalmic Personnel).
In Bangladesh, we are quite familiar with the term "Ophthalmologist" or "eye doctor." However, those who receive eye care in developed countries are more aware of the roles of Optometrists and Refractionists.
In Bangladesh, trusted professionals like Optometrists, Refractionists, Ocularists, Ophthalmic Paramedics, and MLOPs work in many prominent eye hospitals such as Islamia Eye Hospital, BNBS Eye Hospital, Lions Eye Hospital, Prime Bank Eye Hospital, and almost all district and sub-district level eye hospitals. These professionals ensure the quality of eye care both in hospitals and in the field is of a high standard.
The Bangladesh Academy of Optometry (BAO) is working tirelessly to advocate for the rights of Optometrists, Refractionists, Ocularists, Ophthalmic Paramedics, and MLOPs across Bangladesh.
In neighboring countries like India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Japan, and other developed nations, professionals like Optometrists, Refractionists, Ocularists, Ophthalmic Paramedics, and MLOPs are employed at the government level.
However, even after nearly 53 years of independence, there has been no policy or recruitment of these professionals—Optometrists, Refractionists, Ocularists, Ophthalmic Paramedics, and MLOPs—at the government level in Bangladesh.
Whose responsibility is this?
I respectfully appeal to the Honorable Chief Advisor, the Health Advisor, and all concerned authorities to create policies for the recruitment of Optometrists, Refractionists, Ocularists, Ophthalmic Paramedics, and MLOPs, and to ensure their access to education.
This will create employment opportunities, develop a skilled workforce, and generate significant foreign currency through overseas employment. Most importantly, it will enhance the quality of eye care services in our country. Insha'Allah, Optometrists, Refractionists, Ocularists, Ophthalmic Paramedics, and MLOPs will play a pioneering role in building the Golden Bengal of Optometrist's dreams.
Special thanks to The collage of Optometry and Orbis .(collated Videos.)and World Council of Optometry.
