UK Building New Heavy Lift Helicopter Variant That's More Advanced Than Ever

The UK is acquiring 14 new CH-47ER (Extended Range) Chinook helicopters to modernize its heavy-lift helicopter fleet, with production underway at Boeing’s Philadelphia facility. The first two airframes began construction in 2025, with deliveries expected to start in 2027, initial operating capability in May 2029, and full operating capability by October 2030.

The CH-47ER variant features larger fuel tanks for a range of up to 1,000 miles, advanced avionics including the Collins Aerospace Common Aviation Architecture System (CAAS) with a glass cockpit, and enhanced survivability.
