Video onboard 2019 Nova Bus LFS 8682 on the Bx7 from Washington Heights to Riverdale via University Avenue and Fordham Road in The Bronx. Due to the annual NYC Summer Streets event, there were major detours on multiple buses operating through upper Manhattan. Summer Streets is an annual event held on weekends during late July and through August overseen by NYCDOT in partnership along with other agencies. In each of the five boroughs, certain roadways are closed off to all vehicular traffic and are open for recreational use by pedestrians and cyclists. There are various "rest stops" with performances, activities, and giveaways, including free samples and from local vendors, other small businesses, and various corporations. This year there were many more road closures to coincide with the 400th anniversary of New York City.
In Manhattan, Lafayette Street, Park Avenue, 110th Street, and Broadway were all closed to traffic, from the Brooklyn Bridge entrance to Dyckman Street. This was the case for three consecutive Saturdays. There was no bus service on Broadway on these weekends between 168th and 207th Street. Due to the street grid and geography in the northern sections of Washington Heights and in Inwood, there were no safe routes for through bus service between the neighborhoods in either direction as a result of this closure. This led to a pretty interesting detour where the Bx7 and M100 sent via The Bronx to travel between Inwood and Washington Heights. In the case of the M100 this was the first time since 1989, when the route was cut to Inwood from the Riverdale City Line (creating the Bx20 and today's Bx7).
A rundown of the trip will be provided soon.
