In a study, published in Diabetologia, Dr. Galderisi reveals that in individuals with stage 2 type 1 diabetes, beta cell function and insulin clearance demonstrate distinct trajectories, influenced by both natural progression and responses to immunotherapy like teplizumab.
The significant metabolic heterogeneity among individuals at risk of type 1 diabetes, identified as slow- and rapid-progressors, challenge the traditional view on disease progression and response to treatment.
This work underscores the potential of using metabolic metrics to refine preclinical stages of type 1 diabetes and improve the design of future prevention trials.
