On Constitution Day, 15 August 2025, Prime Minister Hon. James Marape urged all Papua New Guineans — especially the next generation of leaders — to uphold and defend the National Constitution. Speaking at the University of Papua New Guinea, he reflected on the vision of the Constitutional Planning Committee, led by Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare and Dr John Momis, whose work gave the nation “one of the most inclusive nation-building documents ever found on planet Earth.”
The Prime Minister reminded the nation that the Constitution — alongside the Bible — is the guiding document that binds PNG’s diversity, frames its governance, and protects citizens’ rights. He honoured the pioneers of 1975, praised the role of the country’s premier universities, and highlighted achievements such as the appointment of Helen Roalakona as PNG’s first female Public Prosecutor.
Prime Minister Marape also emphasised respect for the rule of law, peaceful dispute resolution through the judiciary, and his government’s commitment to strengthening the courts. He called on every citizen to make a personal pledge to uphold the Constitution as the greatest gift to PNG on its golden jubilee.
📅 Adopted: 15 August 1975
🎯 Came into Effect: 16 September 1975
