This physics video tutorial explains how to calculate the energy stored in an inductor. It also explains how to calculate the energy density of the magnetic field created by the inductor. As the current increases, the inductor stores energy by the expansion of a magnetic field. As the current in the circuit decreases, the inductor releases energy back into the circuit as the magnetic field collapses. This video contains a few examples and practice problems.
