I Paid a Script Consultant $150 for Screenwriting Tips — Was it Worth it? (ft Naomi Beaty)

When it comes to screenwriting tips, finding the right script consultant could be a daunting experience. This video gives you a look inside my time with a screenplay teacher.

There is lots of information on screenwriting for beginners, but it helps to find someone in the industry who is not only experienced and a great teacher, but someone who genuinely champions you as you move from the space of outlining your movie script to forming the first draft of your film.

Ultimately, you have to do the work, but finding someone who is able to nudge you in the right direction, as well as confirm or expel your doubts could make this screenwriting journey more approachable.

This video walks you through screenwriting advice that empowered me to take action into turning my idea into a full-length feature film.

Naomi shared helpful insight in that we learn the most from completing an entire script, and then, rewriting it as opposed to starting ten but having finished none. The process of completing a project is valuable to a beginner screenwriter.

My beat sheet changed every day as I was preparing to send it through to Naomi, and I had serious doubts as to whether I knew what I was doing because the story evolved so much from the original idea I had.

It was encouraging to have her expel that my idea was “bad” because it kept changing. She reaffirmed the freedom within the development phase and shared examples of how she too has been in situations where she has seen a story evolve three times within a certain day.

I hope you gain some insight that could help you out in writing your screenplay. I'm excited to step into the shoes of a screenwriter and embrace the journey that lies ahead.

She kindly broke down what the next steps would be from where we left off, to when it would be a good idea to start writing the first draft. Surprisingly, she challenged me to do what felt like “fun”, and whether that was a combination of writing here or there, or digging back into the outline, the freedom to invite a playful nature into the process spoke to me.
