The Taleghan-2 facility is a key component of Iran's Parchin military complex, located approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Tehran. Historically, it was central to the AMAD Plan, Iran's pre-2003 nuclear weapons development program, where it housed a smaller high-explosive test chamber, flash X-ray systems, and related diagnostics equipment for simulating nuclear detonation components, such as multi-point initiation systems (MPI) for implosion-type warheads. These activities involved testing explosives like PETN (a plastic explosive used in detonators) and neutron initiators to trigger fission chains. The site was never inspected by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has long raised concerns about undeclared nuclear activities at Parchin. Israeli intelligence, including documents seized in 2018, confirmed its role in weaponization research.

The facility was destroyed in an Israeli airstrike on October 25, 2024, targeting equipment linked to ongoing, low-level weaponization experiments conducted by a small group of scientists with limited regime oversight. This strike occurred amid escalating tensions following Iran's missile attacks on Israel, though it spared Iran's main enrichment sites like Natanz and Fordow per U.S. guidance. Iran has denied any nuclear weapons intent, claiming Parchin activities are conventional military R&D, and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi noted in November 2024 that no nuclear material was confirmed at Taleghan-2.
Satellite imagery analyzed by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) confirms rapid reconstruction at Taleghan-2, beginning in mid-May 2025—well before the June 2025 Israel-Iran 12-Day War—and accelerating afterward.
May 2025: A temporary black cover was installed over the strike-damaged ruins to conceal debris and enable groundwork.
June 2025: Foundations laid for new structures, with the site untouched during the war.
August 30, 2025: Erection of a primary arch-roofed building (~45m x 17m) over the original footprint, plus two smaller arched structures (~20m x 7m each) on adjacent foundations. These designs suggest potential earth bunkering for blast resistance.
September 27, 2025: Addition of a third smaller arched structure; modest progress on others, including "blast trap" features (offset entrances to deflect incoming munitions) in the side buildings.
November 2025: Emergence of a large cylindrical vessel (~36m long, ~12m diameter) inside the main domed building, resembling a high-explosive containment chamber for implosion tests. A support facility (~200m east, near Taleghan-1) is also under construction, possibly for diagnostics or control.
