Maurizio Cazzati (March 1, 1616 - September 28, 1678) was an Italian composer of the 17th century. Born in Luzzara, Emilia-Romagna, Cazzati was one of the most prolific composers of his time, producing a wide variety of works, including motets, sonatas, concertos, and sacred music.
Cazzati was a master of counterpoint and choral writing, and his works are characterized by great melodic beauty and complex harmonic structure. His compositions are often influenced by the Venetian music of his time, but Cazzati developed a personal style that made him one of the most important composers of the early Italian Baroque.
Cazzati worked as a maestro di cappella in several Italian cities, including Mantua, Bologna, and Rome. He also composed music for the court of Modena, where he served as maestro di cappella for Duke Francesco II d'Este.
Cazzati's works were rediscovered in recent decades, and today they are considered an important contribution to the musical repertoire of the early Italian Baroque. His compositions are regularly performed by musical groups specializing in early music, and are available in several recordings.
Cazzati was a composer of great talent and originality, and his works continue to fascinate listeners today.
