Join me on an exclusive tour of the Silva Kaputikyan House-Museum in Yerevan, Armenia, presented entirely in the Armenian language. This museum preserves the legacy of one of Armenia's most celebrated poets and influential figures, Silva Gaboudigian (Kaputikian) (1919-2006).
Who was Silva Kaputikyan?
Born to parents from the historic Armenian city of Van, Kaputikyan became a literary giant, publishing over 60 collections of poetry. Her first collection was released in 1945 after she graduated from Yerevan State University in 1941 and studied at the Gorky Institute of Literature in Moscow (1949-50).
She was married to the renowned poet Hovhannes Shiraz, and their only son, Ara Shiraz, became a prominent sculptor.
A powerful voice for the Armenian people, Kaputikyan was a leading figure in the Karabakh movement during the last years of Soviet rule. Her famous quote, "You must take revenge by continuing to live," from her book "Midway Contemplations" (1961), reflects her call for "peaceful revenge" in response to the Armenian Genocide.
After Armenia gained independence in 1991, she remained a critical observer of the government and the Armenian National Movement (ANM) party. In a powerful act of protest, she returned the Mesrob Mashtots Order to the President in 2004 following the use of violence against peaceful protestors.
She was honored and buried at the Pantheon of Komitas Park in Yerevan.
