What To Wear For Cold Weather Hiking

Then check out my layering system! I won't say it's perfect, but it's served me well in many different situations and variable weather.

I use the 'onion system' (great name, I know!) where the idea is you have multiple different layers with a specific purpose, allowing you to easily alter what you wear to exactly match your requirements.

I start by covering as much of my skin with a good base layer. I like to use synthetic blends (a mixture of polypro and merino). This includes feet, I use a liner sock first, and then a merino sock over that - which is a game changer for blister and rubbing prevention.

Not mentioned in the video is what I do with gloves. I use synthetic liner gloves as a 'base layer' and then lightly insulated and quick drying waterproof gloves. If i'm climbing I'll also bring a more durable work glove.

I then typically follow this up with my softshell jacket when in fine weather. If it's particularly cold I'll wear a fleece jacket underneath this.

For camp, or if it's really cold, I use a lightweight down jacket. And finally for my outer shell I use 3-layer goretex hardshell pants and a jacket. I opt for a stronger outer shell due to the potential for really violent weather during winter.
