Before his mysterious death in a West Virginia hotel room, the journalist Danny Casolaro was chasing down leads related to The Octopus: a shadowy network of intelligence agents, government contractors, organized crime, and the military-industrial complex. At the very center of the Octopus case was Robert Booth Nichols, an ex-CIA, NSA, and National Security Council operative with ties to the Reagan White House and the Chicago mafia. Nichols’s friends said he was a subcontractor for the NSA. The FBI said he was a money launderer and narcotics trafficker. According to Nichols himself, he was an ex-CIA operative who’d carried out missions for the agency in more than 30 countries from Latin America to Southeast Asia. And according to the public-facing institutions of the US government, he was a con man with connections to American intelligence and the Gambino crime family.
