Newly released bodycam footage captures the tense moments leading up to the life-saving efforts of a Summit County deputy and an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper, who rescued 78-year-old Paul Weitzel.
According to a post from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Ruggles responded to a call around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 22, regarding a man suffering a medical emergency on the side of I-77. Upon arrival, Ruggles found Weitzel, from Canal Fulton, unresponsive on the shoulder of the southbound lane near Lauby Road. He was not breathing and had no pulse.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Lieutenant Caitlan Kowicki also arrived at the scene. Together with Deputy Ruggles and several civilian bystanders, they performed CPR and administered multiple shocks with an AED until the Green Fire Department arrived.
Officials reported that Weitzel regained a pulse and began breathing on his own before being transported to the hospital. His family later informed 19 News that he is now home, recovering, and deeply grateful to all those who helped save his life.
