How Superselective Intra-Arterial Infusion Works for Treating Glioblastoma | Ivy Brain Tumor Center

Glioblastoma, an incurable and highly lethal cancer, has seen limited progress in new drug development due to the blood-brain barrier. The Ivy Brain Tumor Center is pioneering a breakthrough drug-delivery method called superselective intra-arterial infusion.

By inserting a microcatheter through an artery in the wrist and guiding it to the brain’s micro-arteries, the blood-brain barrier can be transiently opened using mannitol. This allows for efficient delivery of experimental therapies directly to the tumor with minimal impact on the rest of the body.

After the drug delivery, the patient undergoes a planned tumor operation to assess the effectiveness of the treatment. This approach aims to maximize drug exposure to the tumor while minimizing side effects, bringing new hope to glioblastoma patients.
