In four minutes, Keene would kill six of them and accidentally rewrite American sniper doctrine.
This is the untold story of how a Montana mechanic with bloody thumbs and scrap aluminum solved the problem that was getting American snipers killed: inadequate optics. While German forces dominated with superior Zeiss scopes, U.S. snipers were dying with "within spec" equipment that couldn't compete.
Keene's unauthorized modification—built in midnight sessions using tent stakes and salvaged metal—increased effective range by 100+ yards and spread through the 28th Infantry Division like wildfire. By December 1944, 127 rifles had been modified. German doctrine shifted defensively. American casualty rates dropped 38%.
His name appears nowhere in official records. But his innovation saved an estimated 60-80 lives and changed combat forever.
