Scopely, a prominent mobile gaming company owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), is set to acquire Niantic's development teams responsible for the highly successful Pokémon Go and other popular titles in a significant transaction valued at $3.5 billion.

Scopely confirmed the acquisition of Niantic's video game division for $3.5 billion, thus obtaining control of the teams behind hit games such as Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now. Concurrently, Niantic will shift its focus to the development of geolocation-based artificial intelligence through a new venture, Niantic Spatial. Led by founder John Hanke, the new company will develop technology aimed at improving navigation in the real world for both humans and machines. Niantic will retain ownership of certain augmented reality (AR) games, such as Ingress Prime, while Scopely is set to invest in the newly formed company.
