Bad Mitterndorf in Austria adores its traditional celebration of the Nikolospiel. The play, with its script unchanged for almost 200 years is basically a morality play for children - but this small village really goes to town!
The play begins with the arrival of the incredible 'Strohschab' - huge straw men or beetles with 4 metre long antennae, who crack whips in rhythm working together to make the rhythms.
Around 80 men take part - most dressed as the frightening Krampus characters wearing wonderfully carved and horned wooden masks. They run through the crowds and beat people they catch with switches of birch twigs! Much merriment, but they do sting!
Children are asked if they have behaved well in the past year- if they have, a little present of nuts and fruit is offered.
The whole entourage processes from one landmark to another, giving the play 5 times, ending in the little village centre.
