100 years ago, in December 1918, Irish women over 30 and with property, received the vote.
Today, women such as Sabina Higgins, Irelands’ first lady, can celebrate the enormous strides made by women in medicine (such as Prof Helen Whelton) , law, (such as Prof Irene Lynch Fannon) , politics (such as Fiona O’Loughlin TD) and in European affairs (such as Deirdre Clune, MEP).
But it was a combined effort of British suffragettes such as Emiline Pankhurst and strong Irish female advocates such as Hanna Sheehy Skeffington, Countess markievick, Cork’s Mary MacSwineey and Abbey actress, Helena Molony who paved the way for the female franchise.
Female activists from the 1970s though to the 1990s right through to the young voters of today, all have a world of choice and challenge ahead, all made possible by standing on the shoulders of those great women who came before us.
