বিজয়ের দিন। রক্তক্ষয়ী দীর্ঘ যুদ্ধের পর এদিন মুক্ত হয় বাংলাদেশ। পাকিস্তানি বাহিনীর পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় কমান্ডার লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল এ কে নিয়াজীর নির্দেশে এদিন ভোর ৫টা থেকে পাকিস্তানি হানাদার বাহিনী যুদ্ধবিরতি শুরু করে।
এদিন সকাল ৯টায় ভারত-বাংলাদেশ যৌথ কমান্ডের ডিভিশনাল কমান্ডার মেজর জেনারেল গন্ধর্ভ সিং নাগরার বার্তা নিয়ে তার এডিসি ক্যাপ্টেন হিতেশ মেহতা ও ২ প্যারা ব্যাটেলিয়নের কমান্ডার ক্যাপ্টেন নির্ভয় শর্মা সাদা পতাকা উড়িয়ে মিরপুর ব্রিজের উত্তরপার থেকে নিয়াজীর হেড কোয়ার্টারের দিকে রওনা দেন।
বার্তায় ইংরেজিতে লেখা ছিল, 'প্রিয় আবদুল্লাহ, আমরা এখন এখানে আছি। আমরা আপনাকে ঘিরে রেখেছি। আপনার খেলা শেষ। আত্মসমর্পণ অথবা ধ্বংস— যে কোনো একটি বেছে নিন। আমরা আপনাকে আশ্বস্ত করছি, আপনি আত্মসমর্পণ করলে আমরা আপনার সঙ্গে জেনেভা চুক্তি অনুসারে ব্যবহার করব। আমি আপনাকে ব্যক্তিগতভাবেও আশ্বস্ত করছি, আপনার জীবনের ভয় নেই। ইতি মেজর জেনারেল জি সি নাগরা।'
পরে লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল নিয়াজীর চিঠি নিয়ে পাকিস্তানি হানাদার বাহিনীর ৩৬ ডিভিশনের কমান্ডার মেজর জেনারেল মোহাম্মদ জামশেদ গাবতলী ব্রিজের পাশে জেনারেল জি সি নাগরার সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎ করেন।
১৬ ডিসেম্বর দুপুর ১টার দিকে কলকাতা থেকে ঢাকায় আসেন ভারতীয় মিত্রবাহিনীর কমান্ডার জেনারেল জগজিৎ সিং অরোরার চিফ অফ স্টাফ মেজর জেনারেল জেএফআর জ্যাকব। এরপর পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনীর পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় কমান্ডের হেডকোয়ার্টারে চলে আত্মসমর্পণের দলিল তৈরির বৈঠক। বৈঠকে উপস্থিত ছিলেন পাকিস্তানি বাহিনীর পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় কমান্ডার লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল আমীর আবদুল্লাহ নিয়াজী, মেজর জেনারেল রাও ফরমান আলী ও মেজর জেনারেল মোহাম্মদ জামশেদ। যৌথবাহিনীর পক্ষে ছিলেন মেজর জেনারেল জেএফআর জ্যাকব, মেজর জেনারেল গন্ধর্ভ সিং নাগরা ও কাদেরিয়া বাহিনীর কমান্ডার কাদের সিদ্দিকী।
বিকেল ৪টায় লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল আমীর আবদুল্লাহ নিয়াজী রেসকোর্স ময়দানে পৌঁছালে তাকে ২ পক্ষের সেনারা গার্ড অফ অনার দেয়। এরপর বিকেল ৪টা ৩১ মিনিটে নিয়াজী আত্মসমর্পণের দলিলে সই করেন। সিদ্ধান্ত হয়, আত্মসমর্পণের দলিলে সই করবেন ভারতের পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় কমান্ডার ও যৌথবাহিনীর প্রধান লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল জগজিৎ সিং অরোরা এবং পাকিস্তানি বাহিনীর পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় কমান্ডার লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল আমীর আবদুল্লাহ নিয়াজী। আত্মসমর্পণ দলিলে পাকিস্তানি নৌ-পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় কমান্ডের কমান্ডার রিয়ার-অ্যাডমিরাল মোহাম্মদ শরিফ, পাকিস্তান বিমানবাহিনীর পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় বিমান বাহিনীর কমান্ডার এয়ার ভাইস-মার্শাল প্যাট্রিক ডেসমন্ড কালাঘানও সই করেন। আত্মসমর্পণের আনুষ্ঠানিকতায় বাংলাদেশ সরকারের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করেন এ কে খন্দকার। তিনি এ সময় সাক্ষী হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন। ভারতের পক্ষে সাক্ষী হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন ভারতীয় ৪র্থ কোরের কমান্ডার লে. জেনারেল সগত সিং, পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় বিমান বাহিনীর কমান্ডার এয়ার মার্শাল হরি চাঁদ দেওয়ান ও ভারতীয় পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় কমান্ডের সেনা প্রধান মেজর জেনারেল জে এফ আর জ্যাকব। আত্মসমর্পণের মধ্য দিয়ে বিশ্ব মানচিত্রে অভ্যুদয় ঘটল স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের।
