During WWII US Army air forces developed the AN/APS-13 tail warning radar to alert fighter pilots that an attacking enemy aircraft is approaching from behind. The fighter pilot can take evasive action when alerted. It was estimated this would save fighter losses by 80% when engaged in air-to-air combat.
