Team Kunimitsu headed by famed driver Kunimitsu Takahashi, has been competing in the Japanese GT Championships/Super GT Series since 1994, and from 1996, it has fielded Honda cars in the GT500 class.

The two drivers for the 2012 season were the same as 2010. Takuya Izawa graduated at the head of his class in the Suzuka Racing School Formula division, and his skill shined in hard competition in both Formula and GT racing. Co-driver Naoki Yamamoto dominated the 2009 F3N class, after winning Honda's young driver development project. Together the drivers competed in the now familiar No. 100 HSV-010.

In the opening round at Okayama, they started second on the grid, the only Honda in the top five at the start. They outdueled several Lexus SC430s and Nismo GT-Rs, and they finished on the podium in 2nd place. In the second round at Fuji, they suffered from a weight handicap and managed only 8th in qualifying. The '12 HSV-010 had a tendency to be sensitive to handicap weight, possibly because of the side radiator layout taken from the previous version, so from the third round, the team clearly suffered from those effects, and was unable to achieve their characteristic speed. At the final race, in bad weather, they fought through a number of challenges, including suffering from tires that weren't suitable to road conditions, but finished in 2nd place.

The race car managed to gain points in every race, and ended the season at the top among Honda teams, in 5th place in the series rankings.
