If Aravalli Hills Collapse, Delhi-NCR Will Turn Into a Desert! 🚨

The Supreme Court’s latest verdict on the Aravalli Hills has triggered a nationwide environmental debate. Known as one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, the Aravallis play a crucial role in protecting Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat from desertification, air pollution, groundwater depletion and climate extremes.

In its recent order, the Supreme Court accepted a uniform definition of the Aravalli Hills, which links their identification mainly to elevation criteria. Environmental experts and activists warn that this new definition could potentially exclude large parts of the Aravalli landscape from legal protection, opening the door to mining, construction, real estate projects and ecological damage.

According to experts, nearly 70–90% of the Aravalli region consists of low-lying hills, ridges and rocky outcrops, which are ecologically vital even if they do not meet strict height benchmarks. These areas help recharge groundwater, block dust storms from the Thar Desert, regulate temperature, and support wildlife corridors.The Supreme Court has also directed that new mining leases should not be granted until scientific mapping and sustainable planning are completed, while existing legal operations may continue under environmental safeguards. However, critics argue that redefining the Aravallis weakens decades of conservation efforts and contradicts earlier court rulings that emphasized ecological value over technical classifications.

Former policymakers, environmentalists, and climate experts have described the ruling as a potential turning point that could reshape land use in the Aravalli belt. If protections are diluted, regions like Delhi-NCR could face worsening air pollution, water scarcity, rising temperatures and increased desertification in the coming decades.
