At the beginning of the anime, Joey Wheeler was a total beginner and barely even understood the basics of Duel Monsters, but after some intense training, support from his friends and a ton of luck, Joey Wheeler became one of the strongest Duelists in the world, third only to Yugi and Kaiba according to Pegasus himself.
