When Magellan staggered onto our islands in 1521,
he encountered a very hospitable people bedecked in abundant
and exquisite gold jewelry that he had to repeatedly restrain his men
from showing too much interest.
The inhabitants not only fed the hungry and sick men
but also entertained them with music and dances.
Sadly, those cultural expressions were suppressed and erased
by the ensuing three centuries of Spanish colonization.
But happily, on the other hand, those were noted and described
by chronicler Pigafetta, effectively preserving them on paper.
Now, based on historical records and field research,
KALOOB interprets the costumes, music and dances of the 16th-century
Filipinos that Magellan and his men could have seen, heard
and written about.
“Priesthood” in indigenous communities in the Philippines,
especially among the Visayans and the Tagalogs, was performed
by highly regarded females or by males who dressed as women.
KALOOBAN relives from the Pigafetta chronicles an ancient
religious ritual presided over by bailan priestesses consecrating
a swine before it is butchered.
