Augustusburg Palace is the first and finest example of a Rococo castle in Germany. It was built by archbishop Clemens August as a summer palace, but he died before the palace was completed - and before the bankruptcy notices. Over the centuries the palace has been neglected, damaged in WW2 and restored. The palace has a similar facade to Versailles in France and in fact, the palace is sometimes called the Versailles of Germany. The nearby palace gardens are French inspired and beautiful.
