It is known as the world's largest bookstore and secondhand bookstore district (Kanda secondhand bookstore district), with many bookstores, publishers, and wholesaler distributors.

Many of these bookstores are located on the south side of Yasukuni-dori and Suzuran-dori for the following reasons. On the north side facing the area, there are many sporting goods stores, mountain climbing goods stores, and restaurants.

Surugadaishita intersection, where Yasukuni-dori and Meidai-dori meet, is adjacent to Ochanomizu, a musical instrument store district, and Kanda Ogawamachi, a sporting goods store district, and is a bustling commercial area. In addition, there is the Kanda platoon of the Salvation Army Japan Headquarters, a Protestant (Methodist) Christian church.

There are many schools and preparatory schools in and around Jimbocho　: Meiji University, Hosei University, Nihon University, Senshu University, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Juntendo University, Kyoritsu Women's University, Sundai Preparatory School, Ohara Bookkeeping School, TAC, LEC, etc.

Tokyo University of Commerce and Kokugakuin University were once located here, as well as Chuo University until the 1970s. Meiji University, Chuo University, Hosei University, Nihon University, and Senshu University, which started out as law schools, were called the 'Kanda Five Universities'
