Centipede is a legendary fixed shooter originally released in arcades in 1981 by Atari, Inc., designed by Dona Bailey and Ed Logg. In Centipede, the player controls the Bug Blaster, a small shooter that can move freely within the bottom portion of the screen. Your main objective is to destroy a multi-segmented centipede that descends from the top of the screen through a field filled with mushrooms. Each segment shot turns into a mushroom, and hitting a middle segment splits the centipede into multiple independent enemies, increasing both the chaos and the challenge.

The gameplay grows more intense as levels progress. Mushrooms clutter the screen, forcing the centipede to descend faster and more unpredictably. Shooting the centipede’s head is worth more points than hitting body segments, rewarding accuracy and strategy. Destroying mushrooms takes multiple shots, encouraging players to carefully manage the battlefield rather than simply firing endlessly.

In addition to the centipede, players must deal with several other enemy types. Spiders zig-zag through the player area while eating mushrooms, fleas drop vertically and leave mushroom trails, and scorpions poison mushrooms, causing centipede segments to dive straight downward in a deadly attack pattern. Each enemy type adds a unique tactical challenge and scoring opportunity.

The Atari 2600 port captures the essence of the arcade original, adapting the trackball-based controls to a joystick while maintaining the core mechanics, enemy behaviors, and addictive gameplay loop. Despite hardware limitations, the home version remains fast, challenging, and instantly recognizable.

Centipede is also historically important as one of the first arcade games to attract a large female audience and as a milestone in game design. Its influence can be seen in countless shooters and arcade-style games that followed.
