Dell Latitude E6400 - How to disable bluetooth only (w/Wi-Fi drops).

Rautatieharrastuksen sivutuotteita... Dell E6400 ja D830 ovat jo historian autereisiin väreisiin kadonneita yrityskannettavia. Ne ovat sinänsä peruskäyttöön soveltuvia kannettavia, kunhan Vistaa ei niille pakkopullana tarjoile. Tukehtuvat raukat ja hädissään kiintolevyn valoa tuskaisesti vilkuttavat. Linuxiakin ne iloisesti pyörittävät, kunhan ohutta distroa niille myönteisessä hengessä tarjoilee. Verkkaisia veikkosia nämä muutenkin ovat.

E6400-sarjan ongelmana on kaksi seikka. Toinen näistä on oudosti kilahtelevia ääniä päästävä kiintolevy (Western Digital). Koska S.M.A.R.T. ei sinänsä huolia esitä, vika lienee jossain muualla. Tutkimustyön perusteella vika lienee kiintolevyn firmwaressa, joka aiheuttaa lukupäälle hepulikohtauksia. Ikävä ilmiö, mutta kaikesta päätelleen harmiton.

Toinen seikka on langaton yhteys, joka katkeaa selittämättömästi. Tutkimustyö ei sinänsä paljastanut mitään mullistavia ratkaisuja, mutta eräs alaviite ehdotti mahdolliseksi syyksi bluetoothia, joka aktivoituessaan joutuu törmäyskurssille Intelin wifi-piirin kanssa, joka sitten mielenosoituksellisesti ryhtyy pistelakkoon. Ongelmana on, että bluetoothin poistamiseen ei löydetty suoraa ratkaisua. Laitehallinnassa sitä ei ole, eikä sinihammasta voi Windowsissa pois kytkeä. Laitteen radiokytkin oikealla sammuttaa proosallisesti sekä wifin, että bluetoothin. Mutta löytyihän se ratkaisu. BIOSiin pitää mennä videon mukaan ja opettaa Dellille kahdella näpäytyksellä, että radiokytkin poistaa ainoastaan bluetoothin. Lopputulos? Bluetooth on pois päältä ja langattoman verkon katkeaminen loppui mysteerisesti. Toimi myös D830-sarjan kanssa.

This is a by-product of my railway hobbies. Dell E6400 and D830 are outdated and obsolete products, but they are still very able to most basic tasks. The Dell Latitude E6400 suffers from certain flaws. The performance is quite mediocre and viewing angles are poor. The most annoying features are the hard drive that makes a clicking sound and Wi-Fi connection dropping. The hard drive issue appears to be a design flaw in firmware of the Western Digital hard drive. If S.M.A.R.T. does not report any hazardous event, one may have to live with it.

The most annoying feature in both E6400 and D830 are frequent Wi-Fi dropouts accompanied by the yellow exclamation mark on the Wi-Fi icon. I did not find any working solution to this issue, but certain views assumed that Bluetooth is somehow interfering the Intel Wi-Fi -chipset . The problem is that the radio switch on the right side turns of both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Windows 7 does not by default (I installed OEM Windows 7 professional) show Bluetooth in control panel or device manager.

This video shows how to disable Bluetooth only. Boot E6400 and enter the setup (BIOS) by pressing F12 during the initial BIOS boot screen with Dell logo. Then locate the settings of the wireless adapter and untick to check boxes to use the radio switch for Bluetooth only. Reboot and use the switch to disable Bluetooth. The Wi-Fi still remains active.

The Broadcom USH that is showed in the device manager with a yellow exclamation mark is part of the Dell Control Point software (fingerprint reader). I suggest that You shan't install DCC. It was a major source for all kinds of problems when I worked with these laptops.

Result? Wi-Fi drops mysteriously vanished (keeping fingers crossed)
