Mammoth's Lower Mountain STEEPS | Dec 28–29, 2025 [4K]

DESCRIPTION:
Finally got to ski some proper steeps at Mammoth over the Christmas blackout period! With nearly 100 inches of snow that had fallen over the past few days, ski patrol was very conservative about terrain openings. The entire upper mountain remained shut during my time there. That being said, the snow quality was incredible in the lower mountain stuff. I found a lot of happiness in the Gravy Chutes area under Broadway: a ton of solid chutes there and good variety. The Bear was another standout: I honestly still don't know if I did the exact run, but I think I was in the correct area. I'm not sure how, but on the final day, patrol was somehow able to open up Lincoln Mountain despite the inbounds slide that took the life of patroller Cole Murphy a few days prior. It felt a little unnerving skiing in this area, but my 3 runs down Chair 22 were the best runs of my season so far! I thought I skied Avy 2 way better than I did last year. Avy 1 was really fun too, I thought it felt a bit steeper than Avy 2. Shaft was a bit tricky to find, but it's a really nice wide-open chute adjacent to the 22 liftline. Overall, I had an excellent time in Mammoth! Going here in December is always a bit of a gamble, and although I'm bummed the Upper Mountain was shut, I feel like I got a really good feel for some of the gnarlier pockets in the lower mountain. I'm sure the Upper Mountain will be waiting for me once I get back here in the Spring!
