Mercedes-Benz SLK - How to manually close the Vario roof | R172

If the Vario roof can no longer be closed electrically, the instrument cluster indicates a fault.
The roof can be closed manually.
Note: For vehicles with code 412, observe the WIS documents shown here.
Open both doors.
Open the "emergency actuation" valve to depressurize the system.
Using an Allen wrench, turn the valve through max. 2 revolutions.
Otherwise the hydraulic unit of the Vario roof will be damaged.
Using both hands, pull the trunk lid up and to the rear at the handle recess.
Position the trunk lid upright.
Remove the rear speaker on the driver side.
Fold the trim forwards to access the wiring of the power rear shelf.
Disconnect the connector.
A power cable is connected here to supply power to the electric motor of the rear shelf.
The document shown here explains how to fabricate the cable.
Only apply power to the cable until the rear shelf is upright.
Otherwise, the electric motor will be damaged.
With an assistant, lift the Vario roof out of the trunk.
Put the roof down carefully.
Fully close the roof by pressing on the opened trunk lid.
Open the trunk with the mechanical emergency key.
Open the side trim far enough that the hydraulic cylinder is accessible.
The trim has been removed here for illustration purposes.
On both sides, detach the cylinder from the tubular frame.
Carefully close the trunk lid until the lock engages.
Remove the headliner to access the locks of the Vario roof.
Initially close the latch by hand.
Press the latch into the end position using pliers.
Repeat the procedure on the roof latch on the other side.
Press the C-pillar downwards on both sides of the vehicle and close the roof.
Close the emergency valve.
Reattach the trim parts.
Close the windows electrically.
In the event of problems: use Star Diagnosis for help or use the emergency actuation function.
Open liftgate.
In the rear SAM control unit, remove fuses 39 and 41.
This prevents accidental operation of the Vario roof.
