Kumaranalloor Karthika or Kumaranalloor Trikkarthika festival is dedicated to Goddess Karthyayani of Kumaranalloor Devi Temple, located 5 kms north-west to the district headquarters Kottayam, Kerala, India. In the past, Kumaranallor was a small village known in the name ‘Thinkalkkadu’ and later as ‘Indukananam’. The place got the name 'Kumaranalloor' with the construction of this Devi Temple. Kumaranalloor is one among the 64 Brahmin villages in Kerala. Presently, a part of Kottayam Municipality, in the banks of River Meenachil.
Kumaranalloor Devi Temple constructed in an area of about 15000 square meters, has a history of more than 2400 years and considered as one of the most important Devi Temple among the 108 Devi Temples (Durgalayas) in Kerala. It has a distinctive architectural pattern, as the Nalambalam and Sreekovil (Sanctum Sanctorum) built in the Sreechakra style. Rare and precious murals are another attraction of this temple.
Kumaranalloor Devi Temple is famous for the Thrikkarthika festival or the Kumaranalloor Karthika festival which is observed in the malayalam month Vrischikam (November – December). The ten days festival begins on the day of Thiruvonam nakshathram and ends on Rohini. The highlight of this festival is the Karthika Vilakku or Desha Vilakku (display of lights in the evening) is on the ninth day (Karthika nakshathram).
The legend behind the Karthika festival is associated with Lord Subrahmanya of Udayanapuram and Lord Vadakkumnatha of Thrissur. Both were entranced by the mesmeric beauty of the Devi, returning after her Karthika Bath. They came out of their temple, got over the compound wall and stood there affectionately looking at the seductive figure of the Devi, passing by. The priests of these temples, searching for these deities, found them on the walls at the southern end of the Kumaranalloor Temple. From that day onwards, Puja was performed over the walls of the Temple on the Thrikkarthika day. On Karthika evening, the temple and its premises is completely lit with manchirathukal or the traditional kerala lamps. During the ten festival days, Kerala folk and traditional temple art forms along with percussions like panchavadyam and chendamelam are conducted in the temple.
