🇬🇪 Gonio Roman Fortress in Batumi, Georgia. Roman Empire Best Preserved Fort Outside Italy

At the mouth of the Chorokhi river stands this well-preserved ancient Roman Fortress built in the 1st century AD by the ancient Romans in the Resort Village of Gonio in Georgia. According to the history of this ancient village near Batumi and the Turkish border, the Gonio Fortress is the oldest citadel in Georgia. By the turn of the 2nd century AD, it became a well-fortified Roman city within Colchis. Archaeological excavations inside the Fortress revealed the remains of a water supply system, roads and pavements, a Roman bathhouse, Roman soldiers' barracks, a water cistern, and drainage from the 1st Century AD.
It took me 10 minutes by vehicle from the resort town, Batumi, to Gonio Village, where the Gonio Fortress is situated today. At first glance of the enormous Fortress, my heart was overwhelmed with happiness that at last, I found historical and archaeological proof the ancient Romans built this well-preserved and magnificent Fortress in the country of Georgia, that to me, was a truly remarkable experience!
