The American Barn Owl is listed by the state of Maryland as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need. MBCP’s Farmland Raptor Program is working to reverse the decline of the breeding population of the barn owl, a cavity nester, by building and installing nest boxes in appropriate habitat throughout Maryland. Landowners and volunteers monitor the nest boxes to help the program document trends in nesting success.
In this video, Program Coordinator Alex Pellegrini and Program Manager Andy Brown demonstrate step-by-step how to build an interior nest box for barn owls using pre-cut materials. Interior nest boxes can be installed inside an unused silo, or inside a shed, barn, or building. Detailed plans and the dimensions for the pieces can be found on our website at marylandbirds.org/farmland-raptors. For instructions on how to build an exterior nest box, visit MBCP's YouTube channel: / @marylandbirds . If you are a landowner or volunteer interested in participating in the program, send us an email at [email protected].
