Kriyayoga Initiation

In this session, Gurudev Sri Swami Brahmananda Giri gives an exquisite and detailed exposition of the practices associated with the First Kriyayoga Initiation. According to tradition, during the First Kriyayoga Initiation a Kriya aspirant is taught five techniques—Talabya, Kriya Pranayama, Nabhi Kriya, Mahamudra, and Yonimudra (Jyothi Mudra). The initiated student is expected to practice these techniques daily until the Guru instructs otherwise or bestows a higher initiation.

In later years, particularly during and after the period of Sri Sri Paramahansa Yoganandaji, certain modifications were introduced. The original Kriya technique, which required the practice of Khechari Mudra, was simplified. Similarly, Nabhi Kriya was removed, making the overall routine more accessible so that people from all walks of life could benefit from the practice. While this simplified version is both correct and beneficial, the practice of the complete and traditional techniques offers deeper benefits to the advanced aspirant.

The practice of techniques alone is not sufficient; proper initiation from an adept Master is essential. Initiation is a sacred process through which the seed of divine wisdom is implanted in the heart of the student. The fire of initiation received by a Kriya aspirant, or Kriyabaan, from the Guru gradually blossoms into Self-realisation through regular practice of Kriya meditation, sustained association with satsanga, and above all, through the grace and blessings of the Guru.

A person cannot truly perceive Spirit by mere belief, pseudoscientific techniques, dogmatic ideologies, or materialistic approaches to yoga and meditation. It calls for the earnest application of a tried-and-true methodology backed by a solid theoretical foundation, preserved and transmitted via the lineage of venerable, everlasting Masters, together with dedication and faith, constant practice by the seeker.
