This was a live recorded session where Dr Rizwan who is working in emergency medicine in Australia discussed the different options IMGs have to start working in Australia.
Key point summary on working in Australia:
Standard pathway AMC1&2 or WBA. You can apply for a job right after AMC MCQs only
Competent Authority pathway for UK, US Canada, and NZ medical graduates and IMGs with PLAB, USMLE, New Zealand and Canadian exams PLUS clinical experience in that country
Specialist pathways for Post Fellowship and MD Consultants. UK fellowships, FCPS and MD with minimum 2-year consultant work. Post Memberships exams don’t yet count
Memberships exams not yet recognised in Australia in lieu of licensing/AMC exams or fellowship exams as off yet
Short-term training pathway for mid-training doctors in core training or ST training or junior consultants to come work in Australia in training positions only for 2-4 years
PESCI pathway for GP who have 3 years of experience in a good setup. Do AMC MCQ and then get a job offer to work as a GP and pass the PESCI pathway to be granted limited registration
Always better to commit to licensing exams and stick to one foreign system (US, UK, Australia 🇦🇺) complete till mid-tier training or fellowship training and exams before switching
Australian visa and immigration laws and time to permanent residency are straightforward and recently incentivised to get more qualified doctors
