Swinging door for model layout room access with electronic latch

In this DIY guide we'll design and build a swinging door for our model layout room, and provide easy access with an electronic latch. We'll take you through the step-by-step process of building the door, installing the latch mechanism, and programming the electronic system with an Arduino Nano and 3D printed circuit box.

First, we'll discuss the importance of height and how it affects accessibility viewing experience in your model layout room. We'll then move on to building the structure using 90 x 35mm structural pine, with an offset on the left side to accommodate the gate's swing.

Next, we'll construct the gate itself, ensuring it has the necessary reinforcement and using ball transfer units for smooth movement. You'll see the arc required for the gate to swing properly and the reasoning behind the offset in the benchwork.

For the latch mechanism we'll explain the challenge of ensuring precise alignment of the gate and demonstrate the button-activated 0.4A 12VDC solenoid system. The latch can be controlled from both sides, and a bi-color LED changes from red to green to indicate when it is unlatched.

The switch utilizes an Arduino Nano and a transistor. You'll learn how the button press triggers a signal, allowing the 12V solenoid to release the lock for a specific duration.

To house the circuit board, we've designed a custom box with screw holes and convenient access points for cables, the switch, and the LED light. The design ensures easy assembly and provides protection for the electronics.
