I created an animation that looks like it’s moving even though nothing in the image actually changes shape or position.
The effect comes from taking a single still image, duplicating it, mirroring the duplicate, and then fading the two layers in and out at different times.
I also added quick black flashes that occur at different rates on each layer.
When these alternating fades and flashes overlap, the viewer’s brain interprets the shifting contrast as motion.
The image isn’t moving, but the timing differences between the layers create a visual “beat,” similar to how two nearly identical audio tones create a wavering sound.
Those small rhythmic changes trick the visual system into perceiving motion where none exists.
All the animation is doing is changing brightness and timing, but the brain fills in the rest.
It’s a simple technique that turns a static image into something that feels alive without actually animating any movement.
