1️⃣ Big approach = wide aperture setting.
Slightly puckering the lips while keeping a large space between the top and bottom teeth when forming the embouchure.
Use mouthpiece pressure and the upper body to compress the air when ascending into the upper register.
Pros 👍: fuller sound, able to access all range with the same setting.
Cons 👎: taxing on endurance, lots of pressure required, more effort needed from the whole body. Harder to tongue in the upper register.
2️⃣ Small approach = compact aperture setting.
Slightly curling the lips in while keeping a narrow space between the top and bottom teeth when forming the embouchure. Arching the tongue to speed up the air when ascending into the upper register.
Pros 👍: less effort, less mouthpiece pressure required, less upper body tension. Bright sound.
Cons 👎: Unable to play with a full sound in the lower register. Difficult to connect the upper register and the lower register.
