Honoring the 50th anniversary of the formation of the International Basketball Federation USA Basketball, then ABAUSA, fielded a team that competed against a European all-star team and played a three-game series with the Yugoslavia National Team. Coached by eventual 1984 men's Olympic assistant coach and USA Basketball President (1992-1996) C.M. Newton then of Vanderbilt University, the promising young team featured eight players who went on to play in the NBA, including superstars Michael Jordan, John Paxson and Jeff Turner. In fact, the members of the 1982 FIBA Anniversary team, by 1997, played in the NBA for a combined total of 48 seasons.
Despite its promising future, the young USA team fell twice to the multi-national squad that featured players from Spain, Israel, France, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union.
