Is Nurse Practitioner a career for you?
Stephanie Barker is a nurse practitioner (NP) in Falher, AB which is 430 km. northwest of Edmonton.
She loves being an NP in a rural community where you get to really know your patients. On top of that, you may provide care for the entire family, from newborn to grandmother.
Originally, Stephanie was a registered nurse in the Northwest Territories. She decided to pursue her Masters so she could become an NP. If you fast track it, getting your Masters in Nursing can be as fast as two years. But she was raising a family at the same time, so it took her four years.
Practising as a nurse practitioner at the Falher Medical Clinic, she can do pretty much everything that a rural family physician can do except sign some government forms for patients.
She recommends that others consider rural nurse practitioner as a rewarding career choice.
