---------------
Ruta de Las Flores in El Salvador is a 20-mile stretch of small towns filled with charm, nature, and good food. We based ourselves in Juayúa and spent three days exploring as much of the route as possible – by chicken bus.
We started with Apaneca, home to the Instagram-famous Cafe Albania. It’s got a giant rainbow slide, a confusing maze, and other activities that cost between $1 and $13. Just note: the food inside is pricey, so we found a local spot for lunch before heading in.
Back in Juayúa, we took a hike to Los Chorros de la Calera waterfall. It’s not as intense as the full Seven Waterfalls hike but still scenic. You’ll need a local guide (we paid about $20), and the trail can get slippery if it’s been raining.
If you’re in Juayúa on a weekend, don’t miss the Feria Gastronomica. It’s loud, packed with food stalls, and full of energy. Prices were a bit higher than expected ($6–$10 per plate), but it’s still worth checking out for the atmosphere. While in town, we also visited the Iglesia Santa Lucía and tried a great pineapple cake and coffee for under $3.
Another Juayúa highlight: Reptilandia. It’s a small reptile center with thin glass enclosures and a lot of snakes. Entry is only $2, and you can even hold a snake for a photo.
We also stopped by Salcoatitán to try its famous yuca frita and see a 300-year-old Ceiba tree. After that, we hit the night market in Nahuizalco. The walk from the bus was a bit sketchy in the dark, but the market was lively and full of local food at great prices – tamales for 50 cents and atole for $1.
On our last day, we went to Ataco, one of the most colorful towns on the route. It’s filled with murals, a scenic viewpoint, and cozy cafés like Villa Maria, where they roast their own coffee and make their own desserts.
If you’re visiting, Juayúa is a great base. You can get around easily on Bus #249 for about 75 cents. Just confirm the direction with the driver.
