When assessing any dive watch, comparisons to the iconic Rolex Submariner are inevitably going to pop up. But the other day in the Time+Tide office, Andrew happened to be wearing his brand new Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze while Matt's trusty Rolex Submariner 114060 was dangling from his wrist. So they decided to put their two watches head to head.


It’s easy to cry “apples and oranges”, with one being a thick-lugged steel watch that epitomised modern-day Rolex up until its latest 2020 evolution, and the other being a solid hunk of bronze nostalgia built by the crown’s younger brother. But there are actually a lot of things to learn by analysing these two dive watches.

From the way the case material feels against your skin, to the story behind Tudor’s twin logos, to the level of shivers that get sent down his spine every time he spins the rotating bezels. Considering the price difference between the two watches, it’s interesting to note that there’s not really any perceivable disparity in quality.

As for the age-old debate of Tudor vs Rolex, it’s clear that Tudor are no longer “just a cheaper Rolex". The vintage style cues remain, but they have evolved a signature appeal of their own — one that compels you to wear the watch for entirely different reasons.
