The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, formally released the Constitution of India in the Santhali language on 25 December 2025 at a special function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This historic initiative marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward linguistic inclusion, cultural recognition, and constitutional empowerment of tribal communities.

With this release, the Constitution of India is now available in Santhali written in the Ol Chiki script, which is the traditional and indigenous script of the Santhal community. This step ensures that Santhali-speaking citizens can directly read, understand, and engage with the fundamental principles of the Constitution in their own language.

Santhali is one of the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, having been included through the 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2003 (effective from 2004). The availability of the Constitution in Santhali reflects the constitutional vision of unity in diversity and reinforces the idea that every linguistic community has an equal place in India’s democratic framework.

The launch serves multiple important purposes. First, it promotes empowerment through knowledge by enabling Santhali-speaking people to access constitutional rights, duties, and values without language barriers. Second, it strengthens linguistic inclusion, highlighting the Government’s commitment to respecting India’s vast linguistic diversity. Third, it supports the preservation and promotion of indigenous and tribal languages, ensuring they thrive in formal, legal, and educational domains. Lastly, it provides valuable educational support to students, teachers, researchers, and civil service aspirants from Santhali-speaking regions.

Santhali is spoken by a large tribal population primarily in Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar, and also in neighboring countries. The language uses the Ol Chiki script, developed by Pandit Raghunath Murmu in 1925. Historically, Santhali was written using Roman, Devanagari, and Kalinga scripts, but Ol Chiki provided it with a distinct linguistic identity. Santhali has a rich tradition of folklore, songs, oral narratives, and modern literature, and its digital presence is steadily growing.

India has no national language, though Hindi and English are used as official languages for governance under Article 343. The Eighth Schedule recognizes 22 languages for cultural, educational, and official relevance, but such recognition does not confer national language status. As per the 2011 Census, India has 122 languages and 234 mother tongues, reflecting extraordinary linguistic diversity.

The release of the Constitution in Santhali is thus a powerful step toward inclusive democracy, ensuring that constitutional ideals reach every citizen, irrespective of language or region.
