Bass Bites: small, digestible bits of tips, tricks, licks and more for the double bass, in under 10 minutes.
There can be a tendency to play notes in a closed position overly staccato, or, conversely, to let open strings ring too much. An exercise to check your own playing is to play the same song in both closed and open positions, listening for differences in tone and volume, noticing how much weight is being used by your arms, if you feel you're having to "grasp" or squeeze too much with your hands, and, if you let some notes ring out more than others.
In this example, we use "Blues Stay Away from Me" in the key of D, starting with open strings and simple roots and fifths. (Written by Alton Delmore, Henry B. Glover, Rabon Delmore, and Wayne Raney)
