Every Christian Denomination Explained in 31 Minutes
Eastern Orthodox Christianity formed as one of the three major branches of Christianity following the Great Schism of 1054 CE, when theological and political tensions permanently divided Eastern and Western Christianity. With approximately 220 million members worldwide, Orthodox churches maintain ancient liturgical traditions virtually unchanged for over a millennium, using icons extensively as what they call windows to heaven. Unlike Roman Catholicism's centralized papal authority, Orthodoxy operates through autocephalous or self-governing national churches including Greek, Russian, Serbian, and others, each led by patriarchs but sharing the same faith. The Divine Liturgy typically lasts one to two hours and incorporates Church Slavonic or Greek languages depending on the region. Orthodox theology emphasizes theosis, the process of becoming one with God through grace, which differs from Western Christianity's focus on justification. Priests may marry before ordination, though bishops must remain celibate.
