The time to check new parts for fitment and defects is when you first get them, not when you're ready to assemble. In our case, we have a new cam and lifter set that is destined for our next engine build, and we need to check each lobe for properly ground taper and each lifter for crown.
These are the important elements in generating lifter spin, and if either is off, it means certain doom for the new cam, and the likelihood of having to completely redo your fresh engine build.
Here's how these can be checked with an inexpensive dial caliper and a flat piece of glass.
