The internal speaker audio output volume on many marine vhf radios is very weak. On my boat, a 29’ SeaVee center console with twin 225 Mercury Optimax 2-stroke engines, I could barely hear the VHF radio at anything above idle speed.
Yesterday I installed ICOM’s SP-35 external speaker. The audio volume difference is absolutely huge. The SP-35 speaker is un-amplified and comes with about 6 feet of wire terminated with a male 1/8” (3.5mm) jack. I believe it is a 4-ohm speaker, as many years ago ICOM made all their radios output intended for 4 ohm speakers.
Wish I had done this years ago!
