Welcome back to my channel! Today, I’m going to look at the fascinating world of active and passive voice, two essential concepts in English grammar. Have you ever wondered how the way you structure a sentence can completely change the focus and meaning?
Let's break it down with a simple example:
'The boy broke the window.' (Active)
'The window was broken by the boy.' (Passive)
In the active sentence ‘the boy’ is the subject and the ‘doer’ of the action. ‘The window’ is the object and the ‘receiver’ of the action. But because we want to focus on the window in the second sentence, we make it passive by making the ‘receiver’ of the action the subject, and the ’doer’ the object. I include an exercise so you can practise identifying the ‘doer’ and ‘receiver’ in a sentence.
Do you notice something different in the second sentence? That's right, - by the boy. It's the agent! But be careful – we don’t always use the agent in a passive sentence. Example – People speak English all over the world (active) changes to – English is spoken all over the world (passive) 'By people' is the obvious agent, so is not required. I explain this very important concept in the video in detail. I'll explain the mysteries of active and passive voice, and how the choice between them can really improve your written and spoken English.
