Film: The Legend of 1900 (original Italian title: La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano), an Italian drama directed by Giuseppe Tornatore and starring Tim Roth.
Context: The film tells the story of a prodigious pianist named 1900 who spends his entire life aboard an ocean liner, the RMS Virginian, without ever setting foot on dry land.
Composition: “Playing Love” is one of the main and most prominent themes on the soundtrack. Morricone won a Golden Globe for Best Original Score for his work on the film.
Performers: The piece is performed on piano by Italian pianist Gilda Buttà, with Italian jazz trumpeter Cicci Santucci playing the trumpet on the film's main theme.
Plot: In the plot, the protagonist, 1900, records an original composition (which would be “Playing Love”) inspired by a girl who captivates him, but ultimately breaks the master disc, offended by the idea that the music would be heard without him performing it live.
